How to Create Winning School Science Fair Projects

There are a lot of school science fair projects that are done too often, not done well, or just plain boring. If you want to help your student create a winning project, learn what judges look for to determine which projects are winners. If your student chooses a challenging project that they are excited to complete, they have a good chance of creating an award-winning project. Although it may be tempting for them to choose school science fair projects that they can do easily, picking one that's a challenge shows judges that the student is motivated and hard-working. Whether the project is a volcano, a biology display, or an astronomy presentation, judges want to see that your child knows what they are talking about.
The project should have a clearly displayed question that the student wanted to answer with the project. The answer should be displayed along with an explanation. Ideally, the student should be able to give clear details and explanations of each step of the project and how each answer was obtained. Although you may want to help your student with the project, it's imperative that they do the majority of the work alone. Judges often ask questions about how school science fair projects were done, about the student's understanding of the experiment, and other questions that help them determine how knowledgeable the student is on the subject. Data, tables, and other observations taken should be displayed prominently for judges and observers to see. By providing the data and observations, students make it possible for the judges to see how students got their answers and whether or not their methodology is correct. With each table or graph, include an explanation of the data and the student's interpretation. It may seem superficial, but having an attractive display for school science fair projects is important.
Project titles should be interesting, informative, and descriptive of the project. Make the display neat, well-organized, and easy to follow. Adding pictures and a little bit of color makes it more fun to look at, as well as more interesting for other students. By following these tips, you can help your student create a fantastic project that they are proud of and that is worthy of a science fair award.
